How to save WebP as PNG in Chrome
Need a PNG version of a web graphic for a design tool or a presentation? Save Image As Type converts supported images from Chrome’s right-click menu. PNG is useful when the source contains transparency or you want to avoid another lossy image encoding.
Download a WebP image as PNG
- Add Save Image As Type to Chrome and reload the page containing the picture.
- Right-click the image and choose 💛 Save Image As → PNG.
- Open the downloaded
.pngfile in your image viewer or editor. Use “ask where to save” in the extension’s settings if you want to choose its destination.
This converts the image into PNG data before downloading it. Simply renaming a .webp file to .png leaves its contents in WebP format and may prevent other apps from opening it correctly.
Does converting WebP to PNG keep transparency?
PNG supports an alpha channel, which lets parts of an image remain transparent. When a supported source image contains transparency, the PNG output can retain it. This is useful for logos, stickers, icons, and cutout graphics placed on another background.
A white background in the original picture will still be white. Format conversion does not remove backgrounds or create transparency where there was none. Use an image editor if you need to cut an object out of a photograph.
Will PNG improve image quality?
PNG uses lossless compression for the pixels being saved, but it cannot restore detail that the original WebP has already lost. A blurry source stays blurry, and a small image keeps its source dimensions. Save the largest version the website makes available if you need a larger result.
The PNG file may be larger than the WebP. That is expected: different formats compress the same picture differently. For a photograph with no transparency, JPG may be a more suitable output when compatibility is the main goal. For a website that already accepts WebP, keeping WebP may be preferable.
What to check before using the result
- Background: open the PNG in an editor to check whether the source actually included transparency.
- Dimensions: make sure you saved the full image rather than a small preview. Conversion does not upscale it.
- Motion: this extension’s image-saving workflow exports a still image; do not use it to preserve an animated WebP.
Why a particular image might fail
Some pages show images behind overlays, as backgrounds, or through restricted resources. A normal image’s right-click menu is the intended starting point. If the website offers “open image in new tab,” try that and save from the image tab. Restricted images and browser-internal pages may remain unsupported.
You can test the menu on our sample image or compare PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF before choosing a format.
